Data capture & automation tools for accounting lead in user experience satisfaction, while ERP systems lag behind

Agile Market Intelligence’s 2025 Accounting Tech Review takes the pulse of over 700 accountants and bookkeepers on AI adoption across five main solution types, namely, ‘general ledger & ERP’, ‘practice & firm management’, ‘compliance, research & audit’, insights, reporting, & client engagement’, and ‘data capture & automation’.

We asked accounting professionals to rate their overall user experience with each of their accounting tech platforms. Results show that the majority of accounting professionals (between 68% and 75%) express satisfaction with their platforms' overall user experience. This indicates strong reception to current accounting tech solutions, though opportunities for improvement remain, particularly in areas like general ledger & ERP systems.

Key stats you need to know
  • The majority of accounting professionals using these technology platforms report positive user experience.
  • 3 in 4 users (75%) were satisfied with their data capture & automation tool, highest among solutions included in the survey.
  • General ledger & ERP is the most used tool, but satisfaction levels the lowest among covered solutions at 63%.
Accounting professionals report majority-positive user experience across tech platforms
  • At least 2 in 3 accountants and bookkeepers expressed positive overall experience across five accounting tech solutions.
  • ‘Data capture & automation’ reported the lowest usage rate (39%) among firms, but satisfaction rate highest at 75%.
  • The lowest share of positive sentiment was for ‘general ledger and ERP’, but the solution utilised by almost all firms surveyed.

In this study, satisfaction scores reflect the percentage of platform users that are satisfied or extremely satisfied with their user experience, normalised against the total number of platform users. Results from the most recent survey reveal that most accountants and bookkeepers are satisfied with their technology platforms.

‘Data capture & automation’ had the largest share of happy users, with 3 in 4 (75%) stating their experience as positive, despite having the lowest adoption among the accounting tech categories at 39% market share. On the contrary, 96% of accounting firms use ‘general ledger & ERP tools’, being a core accounting tech tool, however, the category only received 63% satisfaction score for user experience. User experience rests on platform touchpoints such as user interface, ease of use, responsiveness of the platform, and thus doesn’t necessarily come from how integral or functional a platform is for users.

‘Compliance, research & audit’, also in the class of more niche applications at 41% market share, comes in second with a 71% satisfaction score. Meanwhile, the core tech category ‘practice & firm management’ (72% market share) and ‘insights, reporting, & client management’ (40% market share) are tied at third place, as 68% of users report satisfaction.

“The findings from the 2025 Accounting Tech Review tell us that accounting professionals are receptive to tech solutions reaching the market, as the vast majority of users register positive sentiments. Gap between adoption rates show attractive opportunities for both tech providers and firms to realise untapped potential in their respective industries,” said Michael Johnson, Director at Agile Market Intelligence.

About the research

The results from Agile Market Intelligence’s 2025 Accounting Tech Review are based on survey responses collected from 736 accountants and bookkeepers across Australia from 22nd April to 21 August 2025. For this report, we take a look at the users’ experience with AI in their accounting tech platforms.

2025 Accounting Tech Review is designed to benchmark accounting platform performance from the perceptions of Australia’s accounting and bookkeeping professionals. It captures sentiments towards functionality, service quality and platform features, to build year-on-year comparisons. Data has been weighted by practice size and role seniority to ensure a representative cross-section of the market.

A public version of the report will be made available to participants and industry in early November 2025. For more information about the full report, including the competitive analysis tool for technology providers, please contact jarrad.nash@agilemi.com.au.
